Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 1/23/09 How is your winter going? Except for being cold, the weather has not been too bad in Southern New Jersey. Most days have sunshine, little wind, but chilly. Perfectly acceptable for this time of year. We dread the dark, dreary, windy, wet days that our winters can bring at times. Last weekend our friend Capt. John Lewis and I went down to North Carolina to move June Bug from her winter dock to the Spencer Marine Boat Yard in Wanchese, NC. The list is relatively short this year so Spencers should have us going again by March or so. Spencers does a great job and if anyone out ehre needs serious work done on a sportfisherman, we can recommend them highly. They build beautiful boats and do wonderful maintenance and repair work. Just Right Marine in Wanchese does our mechanical work and they too do excellent work. JustRight and Spencers are our North Carolina "turn-too" people as are Grant Boat Works in Forked River, NJ and Chuck Bernard at CB Diesel Service for our warm season work that may be needed when June Bug is in New Jersey. It is really hard to find dedicated, competent people but we are lucky to have hooked up with these four organizations. Your humble Captain needed some mechanical repairs of his own back in 2006 when I had a hip replaced and the other one will get replaced this coming Tuesday. I can't wait. If any of you have hip of back pain, don't wait until you can barely walk to have a qualified orthopedic surgeon look at you. My doc actually wanted to replace the one he is doing next week first back in 2006 since the x-ray for that one was worse than the other but the other one hurt worse so we did that first. Well now the one they wanted to do hurts worse than the first one ever did so Wednesday morning will be looked forward to. Dr. David Nazarian of Booth, Bartolozzi, and Balderston at University of Pennsylvania is my hero. I asked him to make me 2" taller but he said that would cost extra. Stripers are hot and heavy out of Oregon Inlet at this time and boats are catching them well over 50 pounds. Call Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and they will put you on a good boat that is still fishing. We plan to start fishing again in March. Tuna and Marlin start then off Oregon Inlet and remember that the Gulf Stream, the real Gulf Stream, is only 38 miles from Oregon Inlet. We have had really good luck in late March into April in past years on offshore species. Stay warm and think of the tight lines you'll have in the spring! There are plenty of charter dates available for the 2009 season. Book early, pay your deposit of 50% for the trip, pick your actual fishing date later, for a 5% discount on the base charter price.
