Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 4/17/06 June Bug went tuna fishing last Tuesday, April 10 out of Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. The Inlet conditions were good but the shoaling of the channels in teh Sound were a real challenge. Sea conditions were good on the way out. The wind was from the NorthEast at about 10 to 12 knots. A real nice ride. When we hit the Gulf Stream, there was a 20 degree temperature break and the NorthEast wind was about 20 knots or more making for some sloppy conditions. We had a knockdown right off the bat, the layout arm of the starboard rigger decided to pop off, and then things settled down. Nothing like an adreneline rush to start the day. The first two fish were tiny Bluefin Tunas about 12" long. We released them in good shape. The next fish was a nice 35 pound Yellowfin and that was followed by two more Yellowfins. One charter boat hooked up a nice Blue Marlin but the fish was cut off by a private boat. Lot's of blue language on the radio follwoed that episode. Several boats caught smaller Wahoo. The winds the rest of our week at Oregon Inlet wree not for the fair weather set. Wednesday, winds blew up to 40 knots and Thursday was worse. Friday was nice but our party had abandoned the idea of fishing any more and had gone home. Our next trip at Oregon Inlet is in a couple of weeks and the weather should have flipped to summer conditions by then. Let's go fishin'! Call me on my cell at 609-685-2839 to talk about dates back in New Jersey. The tuna fishing is supurb from the middole of June on. You do NOT have to wait until September to catch a limit of tuna.
