Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 8/16/09 Well, June Bug has fished children in each of the last 3 weeks. We are not in any way complaining about this. These kids were ready to catch and it was up to us to produce! Today we had a pair that were 10 years old and another pair was 5 and 6 years old. ALL were expererienced ocean anglers. Each had fished multiple times out of Montauk, NY. Nsturally, children want action. OK, easier said thn done. We left the Little Egg Inlet on time and turned north to work the Bluefish schools that had been there for some weeks. We nailed 2 two-pounders right off the bat but more were elusive. We worked off to the Beach Haven Fingers and back to the surfline. A few short strikes but no hookups. Whoops, a crisis with the 5 year old. Geez, a guy needs to take a whiz but at his size. everything is over his head. We presented all sorts of options from standing on the gunwale (while Dad had a firm grip throug the tower ladder as well as wetting the deck near the scupper and just letting it go. Nope, nothing suited. Finally Dad took Junior down to the head and everything worked out. We moved offshore a little and one of the 10 year olds caught a keeper 19-1/2 Fluke. We then moved toi the Wreck Buoy area south of LE Reef and caught a bunch of throwback Fluke there. Another boat had caught not only keeper Fluke but also keeper Spanish Mackeral and nice triggerfish. Quite a few other boats had heard the radio discussions so the area was quite crowded when we arrived. We had seversal striked but no hookups. A local boat called us on the radio after he had made a move and told us he had a nice spot about a mile or so north. We pulled lines and went there and found a nice spot that was covered with commercial fish pots. Regardless, we drifted the area and had several strong strikes but no hookups. At the end of the half day trip, we had several small Bluefish and a keeper Fluke. The Tuna are still biting. Call to schedule your tuna trip. Capt. Lindsay Fuller |
