How To Choose A Charter Boat

International Game Fish Association (IGFA)
How do you pick a Charter Boat and Charter Captain for your deep sea fishing trip or cruise? Well, it can be a problem. Some "Captains" are not licensed or insured. Others have misstated their qualifications in order to gain their Coast Guard License. Some are not very good fishermen. Yet others are the among the best in the area. It can be a real pig in a poke.
Some years ago, in order to give the recreational fishing public some assurance, one of the premier recreational fisheries conservation and record-keeping organizations decided to provide a testing and Certification process that would lead to Certification as a Certified Charter Captain for those who passed the gruelling IGFA Certification Test.
That organization, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), first made little impact on the charter sport fishing community with its Certification Program. Many charter captains saw little value in having some outside authoritative body sticking its nose into their business.
However, June Bug's Capt. Lindsay Fuller, a Beach Haven, NJ-based Charter Captain who begun his Charter career in 1984, had been an IGFA member for many years. He saw the merit in the Certification Program since he would be able to offer his charter customers the comfort and satisfaction of knowing that if they charter with Capt. Lindsay and the June Bug Crew that the charter party would receive a serious fishing trip run by highly skilled and qualified people and not simply a long boat ride. Further, the IGFA Charter Captain Certification would give customers a comfort level in knowing that the Charter Captain they had chosen to lead them on their deep sea fishing expedition knew a lot about what he was doing and the customers would have the right to expect fair value for their money.
June Bug's Capt. Lindsay was one of the first IGFA Certified Charter Captains in New Jersey and he was among the first 50 captains worldwide to gain his Certification the first year the IGFA Program was offered and has maintained his Certified status every year since.
Capt. Lindsay is honored to have earned the right to be included in such a group of professional and highly skilful Charter Captains.
